The Aeolian Islands, a short hydrofoil ride away from Milazzo, on the north coast of Sicily. Each island has its own personality – I let my stomach choose for me, and stayed on Salina, the “gourmet food” island, known particularly for their incredibly fresh fish (swordfish was a favourite), capers, pasta, granitas and Malvasia (local white wine varietal).
Highlights include the gorgeous accommodation and breakfast at Hotel Signum in Malfa.
Hire a motorbike and ride around the island, the local lunch spots in Santa Marina Salina and eat as much gelati and cannoli while you’re there.
Pop in to Hauner Winery – beautiful people and wines in such a gorgeous setting. Try their tasting menu where they match local specialties with wine tastings.
Capo Faro for the sunset, view and drinks.
Bar Malvasia, two minutes walk from Hotel Signum – don’t be fooled by the unassuming local trattoria in the main street of Malfa; the arancini, pasta and gelati are seriously to die for.
